Meet the Coaches

Braedon Baum
Waterfront Activities Manager & Head Instructor
youthsailing@venturayachtclub.org
(805) 515-6135
Braedon began sailing at four years old at VYC, and was a Junior Member until 2017. Along the way, Braedon campaigned Opti’s, CFJ’s, Lasers, J24’s, Olson 30’s, a Gunboat 66, and raced on many other dinghies and keelboats. Hired on in 2014, he became VYC’s Head Instructor in 2018, and helped build the program into what it is today. Braedon currently coaches the CFJ Race Team, assists with the Opti Race Team, and races whenever he can, wherever he can!
Chase Shockley
Learn to Sail | Optimist
Chase has been coaching with Ventura Yacht Club since 2022, and quickly grew into the sport. She began racing FJ’s on the Cal State University Channel Islands team, spent a year campaigning on an Olson 40, and coaching VYC’s Opti Team. In the Fall of 2023, she took over the coaching of the Opti Green Fleet team, and now manages both divisions.
Benjamin Valenzuela
Learn to Sail
Ben began sailing in 2024 at Cal State University Channel Islands on the FJ racing team, and joined the staff in 2025. He currently coaches our Opti Race divisions.

Skyler Chaffey
Learn to Sail | Doublehanded
Skyler began sailing at seven years old at VYC, attending multiple summer camps before joining to Opti Race Team. After aging out of the class, he began sailing FJ’s and campaigning on an Olson 40. Skyler made history in the summer of 2024 by becoming one of four sailors to be the first representatives from Ventura County at the CFJ National Championship. He currently races FJ’s for University of California, San Diego.

Sophia Flosi
Learn to Sail | Doublehanded
Sophia began sailing at age eight in VYC’s Summer Camp, learning in Opti’s, FJ’s, and Lasers, growing into the sport as she moved from student, to coach-in-training, to coach. Sophia was one of four sailors to make history by becoming the first representatives from Ventura County to race in the 2024 CFJ National Championship. A member of VYC’s FJ team, she also coaches beginner Opti’s and doublehanded sailors at camp.

Kei Glavovic
Learn to Sail | Doublehanded
Kei began sailing in 2014 with his family in the Bay Area, and joined VYC in the summer of 2017 as a student. Spending every summer with us, he was hired in 2023 and lead our Opti beginner classes. In 2024, he was one of four sailors to make history by becoming the first representatives from Ventura County to race in the CFJ National Championship.
Seraphee de Labaca
Learn to Sail
Seraphee began sailing in college on the Cal State University Channel Islands FJ race team in 2022, and began coaching for VYC in 2024, working with beginner classes during our camps.
Luke Markham
Learn to Sail
Luke began sailing in 2022 at VYC, and has been a part of everything from our Sunday Fundays to our Race Teams. Previously an assistant in our coach-in-training program, he was hired on in 2024, and started by helping our Opti Race Team at VYC’s Fall Optimist Regatta. Luke is currently a member of our CFJ Race Team, coaches during our camps, and is beginning a campaign on his C420!
Logan Nordahl
Learn to Sail | Optimist
Logan began sailing at eight years old at VYC, sailing Opti’s and FJ’s during her summers with us. She was an assistant coach for the 2023 season before being hired on in 2024.
“The Horizons Program”
VYC’s Coach-in-Training Program was created in 2019 to begin cultivating a coaching staff from within. Stocked with former students looking to volunteer their time, the program gives a leg-up when the hiring process renews. It is recommended that Horizon Coaches earn their California Boaters Card.
Horizon Volunteers bridge the gap between the paid staff and the students, spending most of their time shadowing staff to learn the ins and outs of VYC’s youth program while developing their own coaching skills. The other portion of their time is still spent in our sailboats, helping students do everything from getting over fear to honing techniques.
Horizon Coaches must be Annual Junior Members in good standing, but any camp attended in a coaching capacity is fee-free! Volunteer hours can be signed off on by VYC’s Waterfront Activities Manager.

FAQ’s & More

►The gathering and sign-in/out area is located in VYC’s downstairs patio, which can be reached through the club’s foyer or by walking around the clubhouse.
►Drop off is from 8:45 – 9:00 AM
►Pick up is from 3:45 – 4:15 PM
►Students must be signed in/out by their parent/guardian. Contact us for case-by-case exceptions.
►Per VYC’s Bylaws, parents/guardians who are not VYC Members must vacate the premises after drop off and pick up, and are not allowed to enter VYC’s gear sheds or be on the docks and gangways.
►VYC’s staff accompany students in our coach boats, and will rarely join students in their sailboats. Though this creates a steep learning curve for new students, it has been proven to instill a greater sense of independence, initiative, and pride in their accomplishments!

Our Swim and Capsize drills are mandatory for all first-time summer students. Both drills take place at the VYC Guest Dock in a safe, controlled environment. Any student refusing to take either drill will be removed from camp.
Our Swim Test spans ~100′, with students swimming in lifejackets across the Guest Dock fairway and back.
Following a demonstration, students will flip, or ‘capsize’, their boats onto the side, right them, and climb inside.
Sailors understand better than most that plans change, and we offer the following cancellation policy on camps:
